Steans Foundation Joins Eleanor Program in North Lawndale
The Steans Family Foundation's deep community connections and the Eleanor Foundation's research-driven insights brought the two grant- makers together. Our shared interests in education and economic development focused on engaging a community-based employer in collaborative workforce investments. The partnership came to fruition when Steans' Executive Director Reginald Jones met Guy Medaglia, CEO of St. Anthony Hospital, a 165-bed community teaching hospital located in North Lawndale that wanted to do more for its employees and neighbors but whose resources were constrained by healthcare delivery costs. With the St. Anthony Foundation, we jointly designed and funded the hospital's School at Work program. Launched in 2008, this innovative effort educates and promotes the hospital's entry-level employees from within—advancing them into higher-paying, skilled jobs while also addressing the community's healthcare needs.
